Step 1

Choose the trade and the place

With the M&A Pack on your account, open Find companies from the dashboard menu. Under Build your company search, in Trade and place, choose the sector codes for the kind of business you want.

Under Where, add the places. Where is read from each company's registered office postcode. Company name contains narrows it further.

What you should see: Your sector codes listed as you pick them.

Step 2

Narrow by owners, age and size

Under People and business size (optional): Directors or owners aged at least, Who counts (Majority owners, Directors or Either), At least this many staff and Turnover at least (£).

More filters adds how long the company has traded (Trading at least and Trading at most, in years), how long a person has been In post, Only one director, Sole owner, Shared surname (often family-run), No successor and Ownership.

Step 3

Search and review the companies

Press Search companies. Under Review your companies, each company shows where it is and when it was incorporated, with the people your search asked for.

Ages are only ever shown as a band (for example, aged 55 to 59), never a date of birth.

Find companies results: a company from the register with its signals (trading 30 years, only director, sole owner), its accounts and its owner

What you should see: A count of the companies shown and a card for each.

Step 4

Open a company's profile

Press More details on a company to see all its directors and owners on the register and a timeline of its changes.

Each company you open uses one of your 500 company profiles a month. Opening the same company again in the same billing month is not counted again, and a profile that could not be read is given back.

A family-run company on the register: trading 41 years, a director change this year, its owner aged 70 to 74 holding over 50%, and the newer director

What you should see: The company's directors and owners, and its timeline.

Step 5

Find a director's LinkedIn profile

Beside a director, press Find their LinkedIn, or Find all on LinkedIn for up to 10 directors at once.

When there is a confident match you get a LinkedIn profile link. Open it and use the PitchWhip panel to reveal a direct number or email when you want one; each found number or email uses a reveal.

What you should see: A LinkedIn profile link beside the director, or "No confident match" with a Search LinkedIn link.

Step 6

Export or add to a list

Press Export CSV to download the companies shown. Or tick companies and press Add to list to put their people on one of your lists.

What you should see: The CSV in your downloads, or the people on your list.

Common problems

Can I search companies outside the UK?

The M&A Pack covers UK companies only for now.

It says my company profiles are used up.

The pack includes 500 company profiles a month, and the count starts again with your billing month. Searching is not limited the same way.

Find their LinkedIn says no confident match.

Press Search LinkedIn to look yourself. PitchWhip only links a profile it is confident is the right person.

A business I know isn't in the results.

Find companies searches the Companies House register. Sole traders and partnerships are not registered there.

Export CSV is greyed out.

Search first. Exports also need a paid licence.
